Yerevan Mayor Karen Karapetyan has just confirmed the news about his resignation. In the televised interview with ArmNews Karen Karapetyan explained his resignation by personal reasons saying the decision was a difficult one to make.

At the same time, he refuted allegations that he was leaving his post due to disagreement with the authorities.

"The confidence the president and ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) entrusted in me has been immense," said the Yerevan mayor adding that his resignation had been agreed with Serzh Sargysan.

"He respected my decision, we had a long conversation. Serzh Sargsyan played a huge role in my career. I told him that my resignation does not imply that I am leaving his team," said Karapetyan.

The mayor said he never considered his position to be political and has repeatedly said he has no intention to engage in politics.

Karapetyan also thanked Yerevan citizens who pinned great hopes on him and apologized for not meeting all their expectations.

Asked how his family took the news of his resignation, Karen Karapetyan said, "The news did not make them happy."

As reported earlier, Karapetyan will work in the Moscow-based Gazprom Company.

According to our information, First Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan will replace Karapetyan as Yerevan Mayor.
