ANC activists hold picket in support of Tigran Arakelyan
Activists of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) and members of the "Against Police" initiative group today organised a picket against illegitimate actions of the Armenian police.
During the protest, they marched through Yerevan's central streets, calling for the release of jailed ANC activist Tigran Arakelyan.
"The picket aims to support Tigran Arakelyan because each of us can fall victim to injustice. None of us is insured against similar treatment," said Sargis Gevorgyan, a participant of the protest action.
Tigran Arakelyan was taken into custody on August 9 after a standoff with police in a Yerevan park. He was detained with six other activists of the Armenian National Congress who were later released on bail. Arakelyan faces charges of assault and hooliganism. Following Arakelyan's detention the ANC suspended the dialogue with the government demanding the authorities to release Tigran Arakelyan whom the opposition alliance views as a political prisoner.
