"There is not impunity in army"
There is not an atmosphere of impunity in the army, but people distrust our army, Gegham Harutyunyan, says Chairman of the Public Council adjunct to the Armenian Ministry of Defense.
Asked how many non-combat deaths have been discovered and how many people have been made accountable for them, Harutyunyan said, "I cannot answer the question as I do not possess such information."
"There is no need to create the impression that the army is in a chaotic state," he stressed.
Though about 20 deaths have been reported in the ranks in 2011, Gegham Harutyunyan says military deaths have significantly decreased.
Fifty-four deaths were reported in the army in 2010. I think that we can compare the figures at the end of the year when we have the final statistics," Harutyunyan told reporters today.
He explains public's attitude towards military by the army's ‘openness' and blames the mistrust on non-government organizations.
