Armenia's Special Investigation Service (SIS) petitioned to the Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan's Nork-Marash administrative districts to extend for two more months the detention of Margar Ohanyan, former Chief of the Armenian Road Police.

Talking to A1+, Ohanyan's lawyer Mkrtich Vasakyan said many defendants charged under the same article have been released after giving a written cognizance not to leave the place.

According to the lawyer, the SIS feared that Ohanyan might interefer with the preliminary investigation if he remained at large.

"Detention is the strictest level of punishment," said Vasakyan.
Margar Ohanyan was detained on August 30 and is charged with abuse of official position and large-scale embezzlement of property

The court shall return a verdict within five days.
