MoD does not confirm rape in the ranks
The Armenian Defense Ministry neither confirms nor refutes the information about sexual violence in the army.
A recent harassment among servicemen in the military unit reportedly resulted in an incident. According to the information a serviceman recruited from Artik town was raped by military personnel in ‘Eghnikner' (Deer) military unit in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
"A forensic examination has been assigned to reveal the details," Ministry Spokesman David Karapetyan told A1+, saying the Ministry had not received any report on alleged rape.
"Only the examination can show what happened to the soldier," said the ministry official.
Mary Sargsyan, Senior Officer at the Investigation Service of Armenia's Ministry of Defense, said they cannot detain anyone unless they get the results of the forensic examination.
The Investigation Department of the Defense Ministry has instituted a criminal case under Art. 359 of the RA Criminal Code (Violation of fundamental laws of the RA Criminal Code by military servicemen's interrelations conditioned by subordination and degradation of an individual's dignity and honor or neglect corresponding with violations or persecutions).
