"Each pregnancy can be the last one"
A woman must think that each pregnancy can be the last one and its discontinuation can lead to serious health problems, Marina Voskanyan, head of the Department of Gynecology at the Armenian-American Wellness Center, said on Monday.
Former Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Karine Hakobyan said, for her part, that in 1993 Armenia ratified a UN convention which envisages that a child has rights even in the embryonic state and abortion is not only a gross violation of human rights but also sex discrimination.
The specialists say in Armenia parents even want to know the sex of their firstborn child which is conditioned by their attitude to male children.
They agreed that it is necessary to develop a law which will prohibit parents to know the child's sex beforehand, but if parents lack the knowledge they will bypass the law.
According to statistics, abortion of female fetuses is most common in Armenia.
