Sarkozy tries to win votes of French Armenians
The statements of French President Nikolas Sarkozy cannot have a significant influence on Armenian-Turkish peace deal, Turkologist Ruben Melkonyan said on Monday.
During his visit to Yerevan last week Sarkozy gave Turkey three months to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
Melkonyan says the French president's demand is ‘from the sphere of science fiction,' which is impossible to implement. Sarkozy simply made the statement to win the confidence of French Armenians ahead of the next presidential elections in France.
The most important weapon in Armenian arsenal
"Armenia can withdraw the Armenian-Turkish protocols at any moment," said Melkonyan.
Asked why the documents are not withdrawn now, the Turkologist said the world is busy with the events taking place in the Middle East and the callback will have no effect. Melkonyan considers the protocols to be the trump card of Armenia's political arsenal ‘since the country cannot keep the documents on its agenda for decades.'
The Turkologist believes that even Turkey does not know what to do with the documents.
"Despite Turkey's alleged willingness to normalize relations with Armenia, the country was not interested in the protocols. If the protocols were beneficial for Turkey, they would have been ratified by the parliament long ago," said Melkonyan.
