No reconciliation without Genocide recognition
Armenia and Turkey cannot reconcile unless Turkey recognizes the Armenian Genocide. Lasting reconciliation is impossible as long as Turkey denies historic facts, French President Nicolas Sarkozy declared in Yerevan during a joint press conference with Serzh Sargsyan.
Sarkozy hopes that Turkey will finally recognize the black days of its history, including the Armenian Genocide committed at the beginning of the century.
The French President shared his impressions after his visit to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial and the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute. The visit helped him understand why the Armenians of the world show profound reverence towards the memorial, he said.
The French leader stressed Armenia's geopolitical role and the significance of strengthening peace and stability in the region, which, according to Sarkozy, will be possible after the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
The French President noted that Armenia can always rely on France.
Serzh Sargsyan, in his turn, thanked his French counterpart for condemning the Armenian Genocide and holding a clear-cut position on the Karabakh issue.
In the end, Sarkozy announced that France attentively follows the events in Armenia.
