ANC activist's detention extended
The court of general jurisdiction of Yerevan's Kentron and Nork-Marash administrative districts today upheld the motion of the Special Investigation Service to extend the detention of jailed opposition activist Tigran Arakelyan for another two months.
Tigran Arakelyan was taken into custody on August 9 after a standoff with police in a Yerevan park. He was detained with six other activists of the Armenian National Congress who were later released on bail.
Arakelyan is charged with assault and hooliganism. Following Arakelyan's detention the ANC suspended the dialogue with the government demanding the authorities to release Tigran Arakelyan whom the opposition alliance views as a political prisoner.
