HAK holds march in defense of Tigran Arakelyan
The young activists of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) today held a march in downtown Yerevan demanding the release of HAK activist Tigran Arakelyan.
The march started from the HAK central office at Koryun street, with demonstrators shouting "Freedom to Tigran Arakelyan" on the way.
Talking to A1+, HAK activist Sargis Gevorgyan said that the HAK considers Arakelyan's arrest to be politically motivated. He voiced hope that "their protests will yield positive results and social riots will make authorities stop their arbitrary actions."
The march was being filmed by policemen. No incident was reported during the march.
Tigran Arakelyan was taken into custody on August 9 after a standoff with police in a Yerevan park. He was detained with six other activists of the Armenian National Congress who were later released on bail. Arakelyan faces charges of assault and hooliganism. Following Arakelyan's detention the HAK suspended the dialogue with the government demanding the authorities to release Tigran Arakelyan whom the opposition alliance views as a political prisoner.
