Armenian Bar Association addresses letter to Serzh Sargsyan
Armenian Bar Association has addressed an open letter to Serzh Sargsyan demanding urgent actions against continuing non-combat deaths in Armenia's armed forces.
The Association expressed its deepest concern over the mysterious death of serviceman Aghasi Abrahamyan which has sparked a fresh public outcry against chronic abuse of military personnel. The Association is concerned about the increased number of army deaths and cruel and degrading attitude of military personnel.
"We are convinced that you feel obliged to ensure equality and justice for all servicemen irrespective of their rank and background. As a supreme commander of the army that protected our homeland and won a historic victory in the Artsakh liberation war, you know the price of unity, the spirit of team work and the importance of mutual respect between commanders and subordinates. Military discipline must be based on respect for legitimate military authorities, which can be achieved by ensuring healthy moral atmosphere in the army.
We propose that you develop mechanisms allowing groups and individuals to express their protest without fear of persecution. We urge you to guarantee that law and discipline will be properly respected and strengthened in the army," reads the letter.
Armenian Bar Association includes attorneys, lawyers, judges and representatives of science from different parts of the world.
