Recurrent hearing in Zaruhi Petrosyan’s case due June 17
The next court session of Yanis Sarkisov, indicted in the murder of 20 year-old Zaruhi Petrosyan, will take place tomorrow in Masis city.
The court is scheduled to publicize the Appellate Court's decision on holding closed or public hearings in the case.
Earlier, the lower court had rejected the defendant's request to hold the trial behind closed doors. Sarkisov then took his plea to the higher court.
Zaruhi Petrosyan was beaten to death by her husband and mother-in-law on October 01, 2010. Her husband Yanis Sarkisov was arrested in summer, 2010 on charges of murdering his wife.
After Zaruhi's death, seven non-governmental organizations formed a Coalition to Stop Violence Against Women in Armenia, which aims at calling for justice in the death of the woman, so that a fair and just verdict is issued in the case against her abusers. The Coalition also calls the Armenian authorities to take measures to exclude the repetition of similar crimes in the future.
