Over 200 soldiers headed by two deputy ministers broke into parliament in South Ossetia demanding the ratification of a constitutional amendment that will enable President Eduard Kokoity to be elected for a third term.

Many analysts described this as a coup attempt.
Moskovsky Komsomolets writes that some parliamentarians handed in their resignations and categorically refused to change the constitution while others were forced to sign the document under threat.

President Kokoity announced that he does not intend to run for a third term and assigned the Prosecutor General to investigate the circumstances within three days.

Earlier the Supreme Court of South Ossetia rejected the proposal to hold a referendum that would allow President Kokoity to stay in office for a third consecutive term.
