Appellate Court acquits opposition activist
The Court of Appeals of Armenia today acquitted a young activist of the Armenian National Congress (HAK) due to lack of corpus delicti.
Areg Gevorgyan was arrested in April 2010 on charges of avoiding compulsory military service but he points out other reasons behind the arrest.
"Only after the detention I learnt that I was wanted for draft evasion. This is ridiculous since it is not that difficult to find someone who is actively engaged in public activities," he said.
"As a result of an examination that lasted about a year, i was given a suspended sentence of a year and six months. However, the trial revealed that I am not fit for the army due to health problems," Areg said adding that the entire court process pursued one purpose, i.e. to hinder his civic and political activities and to keep him in constant tension.
At the end of the court sitting, Gevorgyan presented the judge a copy of "Armenia's Lost Spring" - a film telling about the March 1 tragic events.
