"This is not an illegal tree cutting, but the legal clearing of territories that are subject to go underwater," this is what the RA Ministry of Nature Protection informed as it responded to press releases that police officers stopped the illegal massive tree cutting at the peninsula in Sevan city a couple of days ago.

According to the ministry's press release, the police officers were told that the action is legal and the tree cutting is in progress.

"With the purpose of ensuring purity of water of Lake Sevan, in 2010, 174 hectares of territory was cleared and this year it is envisaged to clear nearly 283 hectares of territory. Currentlly, the territory that is below 1901.5 meters is being cleared of trees and bushes.

Territories selected for public seasides were cleared on May 8 and clearing is in progress. Let us remind that public beaches will be created at the coast of Lake Sevan by the RA Government's decision. With that purpose, the 0.68 hectare territory near Sevan city beach and 1.47 hectare territory in the peninsula sector will be used.

With the purpose of maintaining the ecological balance at the basin of Lake Sevan, the Ministry of Nature Protection is planting trees in the higher parts of the coast," as stated in the message disseminated by the public relations department of the RA Ministry of Nature Protection.
