Protests continue for three years
It is already three years the wives of political prisoners have been staging protests outside the General Prosecutor's Office in Yerevan.
"All our protests proved effective otherwise the authorities would have imprisoned more people on trumped-up charges. The authorities keep the political prisoners as hostages and are obliged to release one of them every time they want to settle an issue with Europe," said Melissa Brown, a member of the "Wives of Political Prisoners" Union.
The protesters believe that today's opposition rally will end in triumph and put an end to Serzh Sargsyan's presidency.
"People who forced our children to leave the country and seek fortune in foreign countries, will finally understand that they have dug their own graves," said protester Mariam.
Sargis Khachatryan, the son of Armenian National Congress (HAK) member, former boxer Samson Khachatryan, who was arrested on March 13, was among the protesters.
My father needs to be put on a drip. He needs serious treatment which is impossible in the correctional institution," said Sargis Khachatryan.
Samson Khachatryan is charged with assaulting police officers during the March 1 protest. Khachatryan's lawyers and the HAK leadership reject the charges as politically motivated.
On April 7, Khachatryan had a heart attack in the Nubarashen penitentiary. Khachatryan's attorney said Thursday that his client is in need of a thorough medical examination, since months ago he underwent serious heart surgery.
