Life-term prisoner starts hunger strike
Armenia's first life-term prisoner Manuk Semerjyan has started hunger strike after serving 20 years in prison.
Only March 10, 2011 Semerjyan learnt that his request for parole was rejected due to a debt of 56 drams. A lattice was set on the window of Semerjyan's cell when he protested against the repeated violation of the law. The lattice was meant to hinder ventilation.
On March 1, Manuk Semerjyan went on a hunger strike together with several convicts. He demands a meeting with RA Justice Minister Hrayr Tovmasyan. Semerjyan's attorney is going to bring a lawsuit against the head of Nubarashen penitentiary Tigran Navasardyan.
