Psychologically ill soldiers commit suicide?
Those who commit suicide in Armenia are mainly youth ranging from 20 to 40 years of age. "That is a social evil for a small country like ours," says psychiatrist Harutyun Minasyan.
According to official data, over 600 suicides and suicide attempts were registered in 2010. "Suicide attempts can also be considered as suicide since they fortunately didn't end with death. There are cases that are not registered in order to not discredit the patient's or the family's name and sometimes they are registered as accidents," said Harutyun Minasyan, adding that adolescents and elders usually commit few suicides.
According to him, those who commit suicide are mainly psychologically ill people and schizophrenia and depression are the main illnesses among 16-26-year olds.
The psychiatrist says the latest suicides in the army are not due to the soldiers' fear or beatings, but the age peculiarity.
As far as the impact of sects on people's psychology is concerned, psychiatrist Minasyan noted that sects are not what turn people psychologically ill, but psychologically ill people tend to become sectarians.
