Biometric passports and identification cards will enter into force in Armenia starting in September, as reported by Head of the Department of Passports and Visas of the RA Police Norayr Muradkhanyan.

The biometric passports will be granted for a 5-year period. Although they will enter into force starting in September, citizens can use their current passports until the expiration of validity.

Since the passport and the identification card include space for the social security number, Muradkhanyan assumes that citizens will no longer have to have a social security card.

The head of the Department of Passports and Visas mentioned that the new passport blanks will not be prepared in Armenia. The government has foreseen a contest-one of the winners is a Polish company and the other is a French company.
