The 53rd Mayor of Yerevan will assume office on December 20.

The newly elected mayor today thanked the members of the city council for the confidence and pledged to justify expectations.

Talking to journalists, Karen Karapetyan said Republican's decision to nominate him as Yerevan Mayor came as a real surprise to him.

"I am not going to make ‘cleansing' in the city administration but those community heads who fail to perform their duties will be dismissed," Karapetyan said.
Speaking about ArmRosgazprom, Karen Karapetyan said, "I like the company and consider it to be one of the best companies in Armenia. I think that each leader should change the sphere of his activity from time to time," he told journalists after the election.

"I think that Gagik Beglaryan (ex mayor) had valid reasons to miss today's sitting. I think he has done many good things for the capital and each mayor must continue the programs of the former one," Karen Karapetyan said.

Karapetyan also dismissed the reports that he had been appointed under the pressure of Russia.

Karen Karapetyan has no party affiliation though he comes 6th on the Republican list in the Council of Elders.
