Today the Armenian parliament will discuss the draft for the changes in the draft laws on "Language" and "Public Education" proposed by the government.

Before the discussion, the "We are against the reopening of foreign language schools" civil initiative has issued a statement that warns the following:

"Before voting for or against this draft law, you must be well aware that based on the current proposed changes, we are not just opening 11 foreign language schools, but also we are creating a foreign language educational system along with the Armenian one, in fact, several. This will open the Pandora Box and will lead to the collapse of the Armenian-language educational system and the Armenian reality itself. We repeat-we are not just opening 11 foreign language schools, but hitting the point which will lead to systematic reforms and will harm the entire educational system of Armenia, including university education, educational standards, as well as the process of preparing localized foreign language textbooks, the preparation of foreign language teachers and more. The presented drafts overtly violate the principles of continuation and sequencing prescribed in the RA Law on "Education". The change in the law doesn't free the RA Government from its responsibility to ensure the continuation and accessibility of education since education is a constitutional right and fundamental, for that matter. With that said, the draft law will be disputed not only at the RA Constitutional Court, but at the European Court of Human Rights in terms of violations of people's educational and economic rights."

The "We are against the reopening of foreign language schools" civil initiative is holding a protest in front of the National Assembly at this very moment.
