"NATO supports the process of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, aimed at establishment of diplomatic ties and opening of the border. We consider it is in the interests of the two states," NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia Robert Bradtke told a press conference on Sept. 15.

Simmons hailed the relations between Armenia and the Alliance saying it is very important that NATO member states cooperate with each other. In this regard, Simmons attached significance to the NATO "Armenia-2010" joint field exercise.

"NATO supports the OSCE Minsk group efforts to settle the Karabakh conflict. But OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs and parties to Nagorno Karabakh conflict can offer NATO to station peacekeeping forces in the conflict zone in case of necessity," Simmons said.

However, he noted, Armenia and Turkey should decide on the pace of reconciliation themselves.

On behalf of NATO, Robert Simmons invited Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to attend the NATO summit in Lisbon on November 19-20 where new strategic concept of the Alliance will be adopted.
