Field activities to start Sept. 14

On September 11, Armenia 2010 NATO field exercise kicked off in Armenia. Today morning, international experts and observers headed to Kotayq Region to participate in the field exercise based on the fictitious scenario of a serious civil emergency situation.

During the one-week event the participants will try to overcome the consequences of earthquakes practicing disaster response mechanisms and enhancing co-operation in emergency situations.

In tens of tents put up in the vicinity of Lusakert, Armenian and foreign rescuers get familiarized with the programme of the exercise.

Up to 1.000 participants from NATO and partner countries, including ten representatives from Turkey are participating in the event who arrived in Armenia via Georgia and the Czech Republic . Azerbaijani delegates refused to come to Armenia.

RA Minister of Emergency Situations Armen Yeritsyan says the main goal of the field exercise is to provide an exchange of experience.

"It will help Armenian rescuers test their capabilities and reduce seismic risks in Armenia," he said.
