Bread Holiday celebrated in Sisian
Sisian History Museum after N. Adonts hosted an event dedicated to "Bread Holiday" within the framework of European Cultural Heritage Days.
The director of the museum Ms. Tsovinar Petrosyan says the holiday is unique since it is celebrated only in Sisian and is based on the national values and traditions of the local people.
Traditionally, the holiday was celebrated during harvest time. People praised and sanctified bread relying on its strong power.
It is not accidental that the expression "this bread be my witness" is the most popular oath in Syunik which dates back to ancient times, says the director.
After Armenia adopted Christianity, people took grains of wheat to church to bless with grapes.
In Syunik, the holiday is marked in September after Navasard [another name for New Year which the Armenians used to celebrate in August] due to the lack of harvest.
