Stepan Safaryan anticipates heated fall for Armenia
Chairman of the Heritage parliamentary group Stepan Safaryan thinks that Azerbaijan will make use of Turkey's presidency in the UN Security Council to extort favourable decisions for the country.
Turkey will chair the UN Security Council from September 1 for a month. Turkey's presidency coincides with the 65th session of the UN General Assembly scheduled for September 20-22 at the UN headquarters in New York. The agenda includes discussion of draft resolution on the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
"If the resolution is adopted it will be discussed in the UN Security Council and as you know the Council's decisions are binding.
Deluding Armenian authorities with football policy, Turkey became UN Security Council member for a term of two years. Today Turks assume top posts in international structures," Mr. Safaryan told A1+.
The Heritage MP anticipates heated fall in Armenia as another international organization, PACE Committee of Ministers, will be staffed by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu.
"We can hardly adopt a resolution on Artsakh. Moreover, Armenia should be on the alert for Turkish-Azerbaijani attacks. Actually, Azerbaijan does it utmost to pressurize Armenia and Karabakh and force them to make compromises."
Stepan Safaryan links the fate of the Azerbaijani resolution to the stance of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs /In 2007, the Co-Chairs did not suspend the voting on Azerbaijan's territorial integrity/.
Spokesman for the Republican Party of Armenia Edward Sharmazanov is convinced that the controversial resolution will be voted down.
"We needn't overestimate or underrate the role of Turkey. I am not utopian to say there are no problems in Armenia. But today Armenia's position on Karabakh is more favorable and it forces Baku to shift the issue to another platform", Sharmazanov told A1+.
The RPA Spokesman thinks that Armenia should use Azerbaijan's errors to achieve the international recognition of NKR.
