Relatives of Yerevan cabman Kostantin Manukyan were surprised to find Manukyan in the Nork-Marash division of the RA Police where he was taken for examination.

Kostantin's wife Hasmik Harutyunyan says her husband was arrested after the police found drugs with one of the clients. Kostantin was taken into custody on charges of drug trafficking.

"I am denied access to the prison. Kostantin was beaten so brutally in the ward that he urinated blood for three days. I have no acquaintance among top officials but it does not mean that they can beat my husband to death. Now, Kostantin is in a psychiatric hospital and threatens to commit suicide," Hasmik Harutyunyan said today.

Kostantin Manukyan has been kept in prison for two months. His pre-trial detention has been extended for two months.

Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor office has registered 15 cases of physical violence and psychological harassment against citizens in 2009-2010.

"Cases of violence are reported almost in all police departments but this disgrace cannot last long. Inmates are violently beaten and tortured in all prisons," says Head of Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor office Arthur Sakunts.
