Police violated citizens’ rights

RA Ombudsman's Office has issued a statement denouncing police actions at Liberty Square during the past two days.

"On May 31, representatives of the Ombudsman's Office visited Liberty Square where they found a group of citizens, journalists and police officers. At about 7 p.m., the policemen asked the citizens to a police station "to give explanations on the incident of the previous day."

In response, the citizens showed aggressive behavior and resorted to provocations. According to preliminary data, the provocateurs introduced themselves as representatives of the Ombudsman's Office. The group has been taken into custody.

On June 1, at about 7, representatives of the Ombudsman's Office visited Liberty Square were again at the square from where the representatives of the Armenian National Congress marched to Liberty Square accompanied by journalists. All the roads to the square were patrolled by the police who unduly banned citizens' access to the square.

Human Rights defender Armen Harutyunyan denounces the police actions as a violation of constitutional rights and freedoms.
