The Armenian National Congress (HAK) today started series of regional rallies, with Gyumri being the first venue of meetings. Local citizens arrived at the central square since early morning to express their concerns and listen to oppositionists.

Before the arrival of HAK representatives, the ralliers informed journalists about their complaints and problems.

Nearly all opposition leaders were in Gyumri today with the exception of Levon Ter-Petrosyan who was abroad.

"HAK has decided to start with Gyumri as Gyumri citizens are the most active, vigorous and determined and openly show their attitude to the authorities," HAK representative Aram Manukyan said in his opening remarks.

Former political prisoners Petros Makeyan and David Matevosyan also made speeches.

"All social issues can be settled only after a change of power," said David Matevosyan.

In his speech former Prime Minister Hrant Bagratyan gave an assessment of the country's economic state.

All speeches were received with warm applause and cheerful shouting.
