Ombudsman will help if needed
RA Ombudsman Armen Harutyunyan received the delegation headed by President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mevlut Cavusoglu. Challenges facing human rights defense in Armenia and the region were discussed during the meeting.
Mr. Cavusoglu informed that this was one of his first visits to a member country upon his appointment to the post of PACE President after Moldova and Azerbaijan.
The PACE President attached importance to the role of the Ombudsman in meeting the commitments of Armenia at the PACE, the completion of proposals in the report by the CE Committee on Prevention of Tortures, the improvement of the electoral code, as well as processes for reforming the justice system.
During the meeting, Armen Harutyunyan presented his 2009 annual and special public reports on Fair Trials.
Talking about challenges facing human rights defense, the Ombudsman mentioned the importance of developing the atmosphere of tolerance and the culture of dialogue within the country and in the region.
Attaching importance to Cavusoglu's responsible mission as President of the PACE, the Ombudsman underscored the importance of ensuring solidarity and stability in the region as the most important precondition for guaranteeing human rights.
The PACE President informed that Turkey foresees constitutional reforms which will lead to the establishment of the Ombudsman's institute. Armen Harutyunyan expressed willingness for support and further collaboration.
