Announcement by Armenia's Committee on Defense of Political Prisoners and the Persecuted

"Before and after a recent tree-planting, RA Prosecutor General Aghvan Hovsepyan deemed it necessary to touch upon the issue of political prisoners:
"First, I don't agree with the formulated question regarding 14 political prisoners existing in Armenia. There are no political prisoners in Armenia at all. They are sentenced for concrete actions that are punished by law."
Setting aside political prisoners Murad Bojolyan and Shmavon Galstyan, he tried to prove that all 14 political prisoners are sentenced by specific articles and are the most primitive criminals."

It should be mentioned that to this day, no totalitarian country has accepted the fact of having political prisoners and Armenia is no exception. The Committee on Defense of Political Prisoners and the Persecuted deems it necessary to announce that the prosecutor of the Republic of Armenia, which is internationally recognized as an undemocratic country, is not the one to acknowledge political prisoners as such, much less prosecutors working by the values and standards of prosecutor Vishinski of the Stalin era according to which the important thing is human existence and there will always be corresponding articles in the code.

They are the ones giving instructions to their sub-structures implementing political persecution against the supporters of oppositional candidates and their teams during the election campaign; the ones turning law-abiding citizens into political prisoners; the ones who arrest, detain, torture and sentence absolutely innocent people to jail by state order, without a feeling of remorse and not coming to terms with the letter and spirit of the law, as well as taking into account political affiliation and being on the side of the oppositional candidate during elections.

It is through the direct participation of the RA Prosecutor General that 14 political prisoners are still in prison. It is by their indications and participation that whimsical articles of the penal code have been selected for each of the political prisoners subject to sentencing.

The international community, local and international law defense organizations and structures recognize Armenia as a country where there are political prisoners. The article artificially attached to people is not what allows the person to be or considered to be a political prisoner, but the public-political activities that people have implemented and continue to implement," as stated in the announcement.
