Police officers will be punished for unwatchfulness
Chief of RA Police Alik Sargsyan expressed condolences over yesterday's tragic incident in the police station of Charentsavan town which resulted in the death of 24-year-old Vahan Khalafyan.
Alik Sargsyan repeated a police report issued earlier today according to which yesterday at about 4.50 p.m. a group of five was taken to the Charentsavan police station on charges of personal property theft and shoplifting in the amount of 1.5 million drams.
"The crime was organized by Vahan Khalafyan who later committed suicide. All the five members of the group confessed to the crime. Taking advantage of the policemen's unwatchful state, Khalafyan grabbed a kitchen knife from the shelf and thrust it into his abdomen inflicting major corporal injuries. Vahan Khalafyan died in hospital," said the Chief of RA Police.
Talking to A1+, Mr. Sargsyan said there were no traces of violence on the victim's body and none of the policemen committed violence against Khalafyan.
Alik Sargsyan blames the policemen for not being vigilant. Unfortunately, the police have no opportunity to learn detainees' biography before they are summoned, he observed.
The Chief of RA Police meant the diagnosis of the Military Medical Commission of the Ministry of Defense dated 2005 which recognized Khalafyan unfit for military service. Khalafyan was diagnosed with grave violations of pathological behavior.
"I express my condolences to the relatives of the deceased, but I must say he had behavioral deviation. The accident could have occurred anywhere - at home, in transport or somewhere else," he added.
