We're paying to become democratic

Politics

"Our nation is paying large amounts of money to be a full member of the Council of Europe. We are paying for the true functioning of democratic institutions, however...," said today deputy of the "Heritage" faction Zaruhi Postanjyan.

She complained about the document prepared by the co-rapporteurs of the PACE Monitoring Committee, which was not discussed during the Monitoring Committee's session in Paris because the co-rapporteurs were not participating in the session.

"It was an informative document that included the notes in Nikoyan's committee report and their comments in a small section. In the conclusions, it was stated that there was a lack of means for revealing the culprits, but the police killed three people," said Postanjyan.

Zaruhi Postanjyan took note that the report also included concerns about the political prisoners. Although the term "political prisoner" was not used, it was stated that the criminal persecution was against those who were with the opposition. The deputy wasn't satisfied with the co-rapporteurs' approach according to which there are no suggestions for legal steps and measures.

"That doesn't satisfy us. We can always come back and say yes, they didn't touch upon the issue of the victims of March 1, but they are not demanding that the culprits sit in the dock. They had taken the responsibility to contribute to functioning of democracy in Armenia, but are implementing declarative and simulated processes," said the deputy and explained the extenuation of the PACE position by the Turkish-Armenian relations. "On the other hand, we were not demanding. The cease of the rallies allowed them to demonstrate such a position. If there was a clear plaintiff, the CE would respond more actively."

The "Heritage" deputy informed that they will actively fight against the ratification of the Turkey-Armenia Protocols and will hold rallies in front of the Constitutional Court.

"I regret to say that there is no RA president. If we had a president, such Protocols wouldn't be signed."

Zaruhi Postanjyan is also displeased with the National Assembly.

"Since 2008 to this day, the National Assembly has been the accomplice of the events of March 1. We handed our partners through the illegal petition of the prosecutor and filed a report, but there was no response regarding the circumstances of the deaths of the victims. In addition, today they are speaking about turning the page of March 1," said Postanjyan in regard to the latest statements by the Republicans and added: "The page of March 1 can't be turned over as long as there has not been a response to why the army was used against the people, why soldiers came to Yerevan and were executed, why special devices were applied and why newspapers were shut down for 20 days. The society must be demanding."
