Not at the cost of national dignity
"The statement of the Armenian National Congress's central office doesn't imply that the Congress approves of the Protocols between Armenia and Turkey," Leader of the People's Party of Armenia (HZhK) Stepan Demirtchian said to A1+.
"The statement was the first response to the disputed Protocols and, actually, there is a need for a more general analysis and assessment."
Remind that the statement has found different interpretations in the political domain. In particular, the Congress is said to have supported President Serzh Sargsyan.
Nevertheless, the Congress has some disagreement over the statement. "The parties affiliated with the Congress frequently hold different opinions over different issues," said Mr. Demirtchian.
"The People's Party of Armenia agrees to the frontier reopening but not at the cost of our national dignity," said Mr. Demirtchian.
The Protocols call for a formation of a sub-commission on the historical dimension to implement a dialogue with the aim to restore mutual confidence between the two nations. The subcommittee is viewed as an achievement but I don't understand it.
Surely, the Protocols contain some concerns. In particular, the parties are committed to refrain from pursuing any policy incompatible with the spirit of good neighborly relations. It means that all efforts directed to Genocide recognition can be considered as a move incompatible with the spirit of good neighborly relations.
Today everyone speaks of the advantages and disadvantages of frontier reopening. But I think that with the existence of a corrupted system Armenia can have no prospect of development regardless of the fact the border is open or close. Frontier reopening will cause extra problems.
Thus, the HZhK thinks that the first and foremost issue is to get rid of the corrupted system.
