A year ago, on August 26, Russia recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states. Today the two republics mark their independence.

After last year's Russian-Georgian conflict, the international community didn't take Russia's behaviour unanimously.

At present only Nicaragua has followed Russia's step and de facto recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The cold war between Russia and Georgia continues at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Russian-Georgian issue is put on the agenda of each PACE session.

On August 26 Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is scheduled to meet with the President of South Ossetia, Eduard Kokoity, who is in Moscow on a working visit.
