Former Polish Foreign Minister Yezhi Buzek was elected new chairman of the European Parliament.
Buzek is the first parliamentarian of the post-Soviet countries to head the European Parliament.
Before the elections, Buzek expressed hope that he would be able to settle differences between the "old" and "new" members of the European Union.
According to "Azatutyun" radio, the 69-year old MP was elected by 555 votes in favor out of the 736 parliamentarians in the European Parliament.
Buzek was member of the "Solidarnost" movement, which put an end to socialism in Poland in 1989.
