Ombudsman warns

Official

As announced earlier, the RA Ombudsman has assigned monitoring of the trials of A. Arzumanyan and S. Sirunyan.

Taking into consideration the fact that there are still statements being made regarding the pressures against witnesses during the separate trials of the "Case of Seven", on May 6 the Ombudsman made the decision to include representatives of other subdivisions of the administration in the monitoring group to observe the trials of Sasun Mikayelyan and Hakob Hakobyan.

The RA Ombudsman has raised concerns over the repressive legal system and the faulty practice of procuring false testimonies through methods not foreseen by law in his annual report and the public conferences accepting the protest-appeals as a basis. Although none of the cases mentioned in the appeals checked by the corresponding bodies by the Ombudsman's demand have been confirmed, the number of appeals, the content and recent statements go to show the working style of the corresponding bodies.

The RA Ombudsman is always concerned with the fact that the pressures against witnesses and the ongoing, unrevealed assaults against journalists (for example, the assault against Nver Mnatsakanyan) are a threat for the creation of an environment of fear and impunity in the country, as reported by the department of information and public relations of the RA Ombudsman's office.
