"On March 1, 2008, Armenian policemen carried out their duties. Guided by the Law on the RoA Police, they kept public order in Yerevan City," Colonel Hunan Poghosian, head of police department tasked with combating organized crime, said in reply to A1+.

A1+'s correspondent wondered whether the policemen using a gas-powdered special device, Cheryomuka 7, have already been identified and whether they cannot straightforwardly confess it which will be viewed a migrating circumstance.

"I can say that the special investigative group is looking into the issue. Policemen were keeping public order on that day and supposedly they used special means. You had better pose the questions to the investigative and fact-finding groups. I can say nothing more," said Mr. Poghosyan.

In reply to a journalist's question regarded the disputed amendments to the Law on the Police which allow policemen to apply special devices, handcuffs and dogs even without an order, Hunan Poghosyan said: "I don't think the law is formulated the way you say. Our policemen act within the law which defines the cases when a policeman can use a weapon." Mr. Poghosyan refused to cite a case. He only said: "You may find the information you need in the Law."

Hunan Poghosyan also brushed off the rumours that their Department employees illegally detain people, use force against them and wear black uniform unintended by law. Note that the facts have been cited during a number of trials including that of the Jhangiryan brothers.

New versions of murder

"The inquiry into the case of gundowned Deputy Chief of the RoA Police Gevorg Mheryan is underway," says Mr. Hunanyan. Serious steps are being taken in this direction.

"Upon the instruction of the Armenian Police, National Security Service and Prosecutor's Office а special investigative group has been set up to reveal the murder. They report on their work every two days," concluded Hunan Poghosyan adding that the Police have new versions of the murder. He gave no more details.
