Official

On October 20 Serzh Sargsyan received the Special Representative of the NATO Secretary General for the Caucasus and Central Asia Robert Simmons.

Serzh Sargsyan said the European direction remains one of the priorities of Armenia’s foreign policy, and the partnership with the NATO is one of its important components. The cooperation with the North-Atlantic Alliance will continue, since Armenia views it as an essential component of the country’s security, added Mr. Sargsyan.

Robert Simmons conveyed to President Sargsyan the greetings of the NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. Mr. Simmons assessed the process of Armenia-NATO cooperation as very successful and noted that good preconditions exist for enhancing relations.

The interlocutors exchanged views on ensuring security and stability in the region. Serzh Sargsyan presented the stance of the Armenian side on the recent events in the Caucasus, the present phase of regulation of the Karabakh issue and the latest developments in the Armenian-Turkish relations.

Robert Simmons said the NATO welcomes and defends Armenia’s initiative and resoluteness to normalise the relations with Turkey.
