NATO CONDEMNING

Official

Today Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanyan met Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in Brussels. The meeting took place on the eve of NATO’s Co-operative Best Effort-2004 exercises that were to be held in Baku.

Both parts expressed concern about the obstacles set by Azerbaijani part to the representatives of Armenia’s Armed Forces.

NATO Secretary General informed that such an attitude is intolerable by any state participating in Partnership for Peace and is treated as a breach of obligations. He announced if the Azerbaijani Authorities don’t change their mind today NATO leadership will declare the exercises invalid.

Mr. Oskanyan appreciated deeply NATO principal position in the issue, stating that “cancellation of the exercises because of Azerbaijan was a loss of an opportunity for a regional cooperation”.
