SAINT ECHMIADZIN REFUTES THE INFORMATION BY THE HEAD OF PRESS CENTRE OF CAUCASUS MUSLIMS’ DEPARTMENT

Official

According to the information, released by “Interfax” and “Trend” Agencies, Haji Akif, head of the press centre of Caucasus Muslims’ Department had announced that Allahshukur Pasha-zade, the leader of Caucasus Muslims’ had applied to Garegin II with request to take measures “to prevent destruction of historical and religious monuments in the territories controlled by Armenia” .

In this connection the Information System of Saint Echmiadzin informs that Haji Akif’s statement doesn’t correspond to the facts. In fact the letter of Azerbaijan’s ecclesiastic is a reply to the appeal-letter of Garegin II, by which the Catholicos of Armenians calls upon Allahshukur Pasha-zade to solicit the proper bodies to prevent barbarous destruction of thousands of khachkars of Old Jugha’ Armenian cemetery in Nakhijevan.

In his letter Allahshukur Pasha-zade arrogates Jugha’ famous khachkars with Armenian inscriptions to the Albanian culture, and as an anti-argument to destruction of Jugha’ Armenian cemetery, informs about plunder and destruction of hundreds of Azeri monuments in NKR territory, Shushi and Zangelan in particular.

In response to the inquiry of the Information System, Archbishop Pargev Martirosyan, the leader of Artsakh diocese of the Armenian Church, told that the above statements were baseless, as no historical monument in NKR territory had been destroyed since 1990’s hostilities.

The meetings of late years of Garegin II and the leader of Caucasus’ Muslims, held with assistance of Patriarchy of Russia Alex II, were channelled to re-establishment of friendly relations between the two people. But such kind of allegations doesn’t contribute to the efforts for establishing peace and stability in the region.
