COMMITTEE FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS APPEALS TO PACE

The Committee for Political Prisoners has issued a letter today in which the Committee appeals to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to suspend Armenia’s voting rights at the PACE.
“The reason is that there is no parliament in Armenia elected by free expression of the will of Armenian people, and this delegation does not represent the interests of our people. The Armenian parliament is the annex and advocate of interests of the executive power which shoots at people and jails its political rivals.
To hold the power, the acting government rigged the elections and clamped down on the fair protest of people, killing by official data ten and injuring lots of people,. Hundreds of activists and proxies of the opposition candidate were sent to prison, 60 of them are still in prison.
Despite the requirements set down in PACE Resolutions 1609 and 1620, the government has made no real step over the past ten months to release the political prisoners and to establish a climate of tolerance in the country except for false promises.
We are convinced that your staunch approaches and evaluations, including the suspension of the Armenian delegation’s voting right will alert the Armenian government, help relieve tensions in Armenia and bring about the immediate release of political prisoners.
