DEMANDING FROM THE CO-REPORTERS

Politics

Wives, relatives and friends of political prisoners and those who, in their words, care about their country, gathered today in front of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan screaming “Free political prisoners”, “Freedom” and “Fight, fight until the end”. They organized this protest today when the PACE Co-reporters on the Armenian issue are in Armenia.

“We demand the release of the innocent people. We can’t sit and pretend that nothing has happened when there are dozens of innocent people in jail,” they said.

What hurt activists the most was that the administration declares that the opposition is delighted that Armenia is losing its voting rights.

“We just want the release of the political prisoners.”

Armenian National Congress representative Aram Manukyan said that they have orally stated their demand to the representative of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan.

“We demand meeting the requirements of resolutions 1609 and 1620 and the release of political prisoners. They promised to pass it on due to the fact that Prescott and Colombie are in meetings,” said Manukyan.

Aram Manukyan also said that if the demands are not fulfilled, they will continue their protests.

Mrs. Siranush, sister of prisoners Mkrtich and Zhora Sapeyan, also took part in the protest today. Touching upon the verdict reached by the European Court a couple of days ago, which upheld Zhora Sapeyan’s claim, Siranush noted that she is happy not so much for the financial compensation, but for the moral victory.
