HAMMARBERG’S REACTION IS INADEQUATE

Politics

On September 12 members of the Armenian Women's Movement staged a protest action near the General Procurator’s office with the posters of Armenia’s political prisoners.

They have been gathering near the office every Friday since March 8. Each time they deliver a letter to the General Procurator with a demand to release the arrestees.

Myasnik Malkhassian’s state is grave. He will completely ruin his health if he is not rendered medical assistance. The penitentiary administration has sent Malkhassian to a medical examination and we are waiting for the doctor’s diagnosis- said Anna Malkhassian, Myasnik Malkhassian's wife.

Ex-political prisoner Karapet Rubinian, member of the Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners, touched upon CoE Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg’s statement about Armenia. According to David Harutiunian, head of the Armenian delegation to the PACE, Thomas Hammarberg has submitted the monitoring committee an oral notification on the implementation of Resolution 1620.

“Although progress is made in Armenia we expect further serious steps”, Hammarberg said with regard to Armenia’s interior situation.

“ I didn’t expect such an inadequate reaction from Mr. Hammarberg. Either the information is false or the Europeans play obscure and shameful tricks on us,” said Karapet Rubinian.

“Armenia has significantly regressed over the past month. The authorities take anti-democratic measures and the Europeans are well aware of them. It is even shameful to name these steps “progressive,” said Rubinian.
