TER-PETROSSIAN TO LEAD 20 JUNE RALLY
Support A1+!“A rally is to be held on June 20 by the Armenian Pan National Movement Center and Levon Ter-Petrossian will definitely participate in it”, Levon Zourabian, Ter-Petrossian’s former spokesperson informed the journalists today. The leaders of the Armenian Pan National Movement consider that the authorities have taken no practical steps towards realization of the terms of PACE Resolution 1609. Moreover, they have increased pressure on opposition thus deepening the gap between the authorities and the public.
“Taking into consideration the cynical disdain of the Government for the PACE Resolution 1609, as well as the deadline of its implementation fixed in the resolution, the National Movement made a decision to hold a rally throughout the Republic to sum up the process of implementation of the above-mentioned demands and the tasks of people to restore basic democratic freedom in the country. On June 20, in order to maintain public order, prevent conflicts and extreme occurrences, keep the process lawful and compliant with the notification for the rally, we propose the government to appoint representatives of the police and the City Hall to keep in touch with the representatives of the movement and regulate the normal process of the rally”, Levon Zourabian read the statement of the Armenian Pan National Movement Center.
Levon Zourabian was reluctant to have pessimistic views and expressed hope that the authorities would not be so naïve as to cause tension once again and strike another blow to the international reputation of the country.
Zourabian also stated that the decision of the opposition to hold a rally on 20 June was definite even if the government implemented the demands of the PACE resolution before the deadline. “If the demands are met before the deadline, the opposition will welcome the fact during the rally and will be ready to negotiate with the government. But the rally will be held at any rate as it is directed to sum up the way the Armenian Pan National Movement has passed and to outline the strategy of the movement.
