Politics

“Romania will support Armenia to get closed to the EU as it proceeds not only from your interests, but from our as well”, Romanian President Trayan Basesku told a joint news conference today. Before the conference the Presidents of the countries made a joint statement, and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, and Transport and Communication signed four agreements.

The intergovernmental committee between Armenia and Romania was created six years ago, but the Presidents assessed the work of the committee as non-satisfactory. In order to make cooperation more fruitful several amendments were made to the protocol about commercial-economic and scientific-technical cooperation signed in 1991. The 1994 agreement about investments and mutual protection was amended too.

The President of Romania claimed that the Romanian businessmen are interested in Armenia. A new agreement was signed today. From now until the year 2010 the two countries will cooperate in the culture, education and scientific fields.

The agreement about European and Euro-Atlantic cooperation signed by the Foreign Ministries of the countries was more important. “Romania will most probably become member of the EU in a year which means that the EU opens for BSEC countries”, Robert Kocharyan said.

The President of Romania claimed that Armenia can use the ports of Romania and Bulgaria. According to him, if five businessmen from each country are interested in the agreements between the countries, the relations between Armenia and Romania will develop quickly.

By the way, during his visit to Armenia the Romanian President admired the hospitality of the Armenians.
