US Senator proposes sanctions on Azerbaijani officials
US Senator Dick Durbin suggested imposing sanctions against a number of Azerbaijani officials. He made the proposal during a meeting of the Senate Committee on Appropriations which discussed U.S. foreign assistance programs for 2018. The Senator's proposal was included in the Committee’s decision. Voice of America's (VOA) Azerbaijani service reports that the sanctions imply access restrictions to all Azerbaijani officials who were linked to the illegal detention of Mehman Aliyev, the founding director of Turan Information Agency, a Baku-based news agency, who was arrested on August 28 on tax evasion charges.
