Voting starts in Yerevan municipal elections
Voters in Yerevan began voting on Sunday morning in municipal elections. They will elect, on a party-list basis, a new city council which, in turn, will election a new city mayor. In all, there are 10 constituencies and 474 polling stations in the Armenian capital where voting started at 8 a.m. The campaigning for the municipal elections started on April 12 and lasted until May 12. Three candidates are vying to become Mayor of Yerevan. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) has nominated the incumbent Mayor Taron Margaryan for re-election and believes that will retain control over the municipal administration. Margaryan’s challengers are Nikol Pashinyan from the opposition Yelk alliance and Zaruhi Postanjyan, leader of the newly-formed Yerkir Tsirani party. There are 841 973 eligible voters in Yerevan. Yerevan City Council is elected for a 4-year term and has 65 members.
