The Court of Cassation today upheld then decision of the Court of Appeal to reject the petition to release opposition activist Andrias Ghukasyan on bail. “We hoped the court to make a normal decision but they did what they did. At least, they could correct their mistake and say that Andrias Ghukasyan will remain in custody for other reasons,” Ghukasyan’s lawyer Karen Mejlumyan told A1+. Andrias Ghukasyan, a member of the opposition New Armenia movement, was arrested after the clashes between demonstrators and police in Yerevan’s Sari Tagh neighbourhood in July 2016. He was immediately charged with organizing mass disturbances during a July 29 protest. Eight people were arrested after the clashes. Six of them were later released on bail or after giving a written undertaking not to leave the country. Two members of the movement, Andrias Ghukasyan and Davit Hovhannisyan, have been in detention for eight months. Ghukasyan’s lawyer has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights. The Court has accepted the complaint and will examine it on a priority basis within 2-3 months.
