Armenian lawmaker Karen Karapetyan knows that he will gain nothing if he introduces himself [to voters] as Republican member in the upcoming elections. He knows current attitudes towards the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) he is affiliated with. They do not promise anything good to him… “…because there is serious discontent among people. Naturally, this will have its impact on my image.” The HHK lawmaker does not hide that even Serzh Sargsyan is aware of this fact. Poverty in Armenia is a huge concern. More than one million people live in extreme poverty in the country and, undoubtedly, people in such a country will not like their authorities. “These people living below the national poverty line will back opposition forces.” Anyway, he disagrees with the opinion that the Republicans will not again take power into their hands after the upcoming parliamentary elections. He only says ‘this time it will not be so easy.’ As an individual candidate in the April 2 vote, Karen Karapetyan does not rely on HHK’s reputation. He has been elected to the National Assembly five times and knows what he can bet on. “Seeing my potential and the capacity of my family, seeing the mistakes we have made, we have tried to use our personal abilities for the benefit of social strata of the given area.” The Republican MP says he has always opposed the ranked voting system and expressed his opinion during the party’s sittings. “People are starving. It seems as if people have no problems and now we are going against each other.”
