Kiraki: Why women aren’t elected: stereotypes, ore legislative gaps? (video)
“If you only once place a woman on the same level with a man, she will soon surpass a man,” said Sophocles, Greek author of many tragedies. Another topic of “Kiraki” (Sunday) program is the involvement of women in political and social life. In 1993 Armenia ratified the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. It forces the authorities to defend rights of women in all the spheres of social and private life. United Nations Population Fund has a study carried out in 2016 on displays of discrimination against women, which states, “In spite of quota determined by law, still there aren’t enough conditions in Armenia, which will ensure women’s representation to the required level.” What hinders more involvement of women in the social and political life, stereotypes, or legislative gaps? Watch the video for details! The program hosted publicist Karine Hakobyan and the NA lawmaker Karine Achemyan. Our colleagues from Vanadzor “Lori” and Kapan “Sosi” TV companies prepared materials for the program.
